So
you want a Havanese puppy? This page and the links provided are
designed to help you do just that. To get you started, look over
the following list of ways to recognize a responsible breeder. Then
when you begin your search, you might find the link, "Questions
to Ask Your Breeder", helpful.
How
to Recognize A
Responsible Breeder
A
responsible breeder:
-
Has
knowledge of the breed standard and strives to improve the quality,
health, and temperament of the breed to which he/she is representing.
-
Provides
the very best care in nutrition, cleanliness, veterinary services,
and socialization with plenty of TLC for all of his/her animals.
-
Conducts
health screenings of all breeding animals, including evaluation
for patellar luxation, and annual eye exams to determine if
any inheritable eye disease is present. This exam should be
completed according to the guidelines of the Canine Eye Research
Foundation (CERF) with resultant issuance of a CERF number.
-
Is
dedicated to finding the very best homes for his/her puppies,
and denies a sale if it does not appear to be in the puppy's
best interest.
-
Is
prepared at the time of sale with all the necessary documents,
contracts, veterinary records, and paperwork for a smooth transfer.
-
Is
approachable when you ask questions and is eager to provide
follow-up support for puppy buyers.
-
Believes
that companion animals should be spayed or neutered. Will spay
or neuter companion animals prior to sale of the puppy or will
sell the companion animal on a limited registration basis.
-
Has
complete and up-to-date records that comply with AKC regulations
and will make these records available to the puppy buyer.
It
is wise to think about all aspects of dog ownership before you embark
on a breeder search. It is useful to interview more than one breeder
and to do your homework by reading the breed standard and obtaining
as much information as you can about the breed.

You
may be able to find available puppies from Breeders listed on
the internet, but be careful to ask questions to make sure it
is a responsible breeder, and check the current CERF Certificates
for both of the puppy's parents.
