For a personal account of the "hypoallergenic" quality of the Havanese, please read:

HOW A HAVANESE DOG
CHANGED MY LIFE

I am acutely allergic to dogs. Asthma, allergies, you name it. I know all about the so-called "hypoallergenic dogs" since I had a toy poodle. I did reasonably well with her, but if she got wet, if we got caught in the rain, or if she was in need of a bath, I would have trouble breathing around her. I could NEVER bathe her or groom her and I was on lots of medication. (Once, I tried to wash my poodle and the allergens came upon me so quickly, I had to drive myself to the emergency room and leave poor Joey wet in the bathroom until I returned!). When she passed on after a wonderful long life, I researched the Internet (as you are doing now) for a new breed of "hypoallergenic dog".

They are listing more and more breeds in this category and the Coton du Tulear and the Havanese seemed interesting to me. I seemed to lock in on the Havanese although I had never seen one in person. I will fast forward to say that after ONE WHOLE YEAR of research, looking at dogs, talking to breeders, doing my homework, I bought my first Havanese. The good news is, I am not allergic to him AT ALL. I bathe him myself, I groom him, and I brush him every other day. No allergies, maybe a few sneezes during the brushing, only if his coat is particularly dusty (as I am allergic to dust). No need to rush to the hospital with an acute asthma attack.

I do not believe it is the non-shedding factor because there will always be some shedding. I think it is the absolute absence of odor and the quality of the coat. I am on much less medication now and just bought my second Havanese. Things that were never possible before because of my allergies to dogs are open to me now. I can be active in the world of champion dogs, dog shows, and possibly, breeding. All of this is possible because of this wonderful breed. I am so thankful that I did my homework, talked to many breeders, went to dog shows and spent lots of time around these wonderful dogs. For me, it is absolutely true that this is a miracle hypoallergenic dog.
