Members
and Their Havanese
One
thing that all our members have in common is that we live with a
little dog with a can-do attitude. There is nothing that our little
dogs won't do for us and all they ask for in return, is a lot of
hugs, kisses and, of course, some yummy training treats.
Here
are just a few of the activities that our members currently do with
their Havanese and things that you can do with your dog when you
get one.
Agility:
Our dogs learn how to maneuver through an obstacle course that consists
of a dog walk, pause table, open and closed tunnels, A-frames, weave
poles, teeter-totter and a variety of jumps. Havanese have a great
time running the course and sometimes forget that they have to do
the obstacles in a certain order. It is also great exercise for
our members since they have to run along with their dogs.
Obedience:
While we all want our dogs to be obedient, some of us go on to train
our dogs to compete in obedience trials. Our dogs are taught to
walk by our side, sit and stay when we tell them to and come to
us when we call them. Those that want to go on will be happy to
know that Havanese excel in this activity.
Freestyle
Dancing: Yes, you heard it right!! Our dogs love music and love
to dance. The more experienced dancers can be seen doing demos at
dog shows and at special dog-related events. Those new to the sport
can be found entertaining their family and friends.
Tricks:
Havanese are natural clowns and our members have come to realize
that there is no trick that they can't teach their dog. One of our
members has Havanese that will jump on and ride a skateboard down
a ramp. Training your dog to do tricks comes in handy when you want
to entertain your friends and relatives. They can even be taught
to ring a bell when they want to go outside.
Flyball:
Some of our members are becoming interested in Flyball. This is
a high-energy sport where two teams of four dogs run against each
other in a relay race. They race to a fly ball box, catch a tennis
ball that is released into the air and race back so their team mate
can do the same.
Canine
Good Citizen: Some of our members have obtained a CGC title
for their dogs. The dog has to pass a variety of control type tests
that show they are well behaved around other people and other dogs.
Dogs must have this if they want to gain their Therapy Title.
Therapy
Titles: Like the Canine Good Citizen title, some of our Havanese
have obtained their Therapy dog titles. Passing this test allows
dogs to enter facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes. Our
Havanese have a way to bring a smile to those who have little to
smile about.
Hollywood
Spotlight: Some our member's Havanese have appeared on TV shows,
Stage Plays and in training videos. This goes right along with the
trick training and there is no end to what you can train your dog
to do.
Hiking/Walking:
Instead of paying big money for health clubs, our members found
that after they got their Havanese they started getting more exercise
by walking their dogs and eating out at outdoor restaurants. It
is not that the Havanese needs the exercise. It was just that when
they walked their dogs, they started meeting so many new and interesting
people. The first thing out of the strangers mouth is always, "
Oh, what a cute little dog; what kind is it?" Before you know it,
you have another person who just has to have a Havanese.
Swimming:
Havanese take to water like ducks if, and only if, you start them
off young. The only draw back, that one of our members found when
they let their dogs go swimming, is that it takes a lot longer to
dry their pup then it does to let them get wet.
Fun
Matches: Several times a year, our members get together for
a puppy match to show off our newest puppies. Along with the puppy
judging we have a fun raffle, auction and sometimes we have a puppy
costume contest. Whatever else we do at these matches, our members
and dogs always have a good time and a lot of fun.
Conformation:
Most people know about Dog Shows sponsored by the American Kennel
Club. In fact, attending a dog show is a great way to meet people
that own Havanese or who are breeders of our little best friends!
Many of our HCSC members show their Havanese at AKC sponsored events
throughout the country, and two of our members showed their dogs
in the Westminster Kennel Club show in New York City this year.
Also, three of our members received invitations to the AKC/Eukanuba
Classic for 2002, with one of them taking Best of Opposite Sex at
the Classic. It was a good year for the Havanese in Southern California!!
